-Hello! Im looking for something to do over the summer and I want to maybe tutor some kids but the thing is im 12 years old (13 in nov.). I just graduated the 7th grade. I would like to tutor children that are going to 5th grade or under. I can tutor any subject except for math (im horrible at math) but preferably english. I graduated the seventh grade with honors/magnet classes with a 4.0 GPA (so straight A's obviously). I graduated with the highest grade in my english class with 100.0% and highest for science with 98.8. In history I wasnt the highest but I got 96.0 ..point is I got straight A's I can also tutor in music theory and violin (violin lessons for 4 years, music theory for 1 year), and my grades have always been good this isnt the only year. Point is I would like to tutor some kids, I can do it for free but I would enjoy a bit of pay (I dont need a lot) and I live in the LA area. So am I old enough to tutor kids? Are my grades good enough? Do you guys know anyone I can tutor? Are you old enough to babysit? And get paid for it? Try babysitting with English homework help, and/or music but not as the only teacher. (If a teenager charges $5/hour for babysitting and $15/hour for tutoring, you should charge $10/hour.) Set your rates halfway between babysitting rates and tutoring rates. By the time parents consider you old enough for tutoring, you will have had a lot of paid tutoring experience.Yeah you can
I'm a parent. There's no way I would hire a 12 year old to tutor my kids.
Students who need tutoring don't just need someone to tell them the answers, they need someone to figure out why they can't get it and what's getting in their way. No seventh grader has the depth of experience that will allow them to get at the root of someone's problems with understanding concepts.
I'm also a musician. I remember being 13 years old and thinking I knew just about everything there was to know about playing. Then I got to college and started realizing just how much more complicated technique and body mechanics of playing were. When you're just an intermediate student yourself it's easy to think what you know is pretty much all there is to know, but anyone with teaching experience can tell you that violin students will come to you with all sorts of issues you won't have any idea how to deal with because they weren't the same issues you had as a beginner.
