Seriously: How do some teachers get jobs?

-I know teachers get the worst treatment by some students on a daily basis and many do not deserve it all. I really liked the majority of my teachers throughout my education and have liked some in college so far. I even cried for my teacher once at home because of how some students were treating her and I always respected teachers because I saw how hard they worked and how little respect they got.

But then I had two teachers I think just slipped through the cracks and got in based off of credentials with no background check as they were just completely horrible in personality and the way they treated students. I remember even being called a moron by one teacher in a gifted 6th grade class and being berated in front an entire magnet class in 8th grade because "it took me too long to find the daily agenda at the corner of the board and read it out loud".

I seriously lost a lot of self esteem in my studies with these teachers and felt hopeless in class for not being liked by the teacher. I'm uncaring now of how teachers treat me and just work hard but it still hurt to be made fun of by an adult at such a young ageLol, high school teachers tend to be the bottom of the barrel of whatever discipline they are associated with. Those who can, do; those who can't, teach... is actually fairly accurate.

Anyways, have confidence in yourself good miss, you don't need their approval. They are people who will never achieve what you are capable of.
Yes, I agree that teachers should be respected because they work hard for teaching. Same as students should be respected by teachers too. When I was in elementary, I had a PE teacher. She is a very good teacher in her field but I lost my respect to her when she told and shouted over the microphone that we are all flirt when we had our dance practice. We went straight to our room and cried. So the moment our adviser knew what happened, she was called by our school principal. but then she did not show up. After that, whenever we met outside the school and even now I don't smile at her first because I still remember what she did to us. It's embarrassing.
Your question is probably rhetorical, but here are my thoughts:

What happens to young people in school can affect their lives adversely for decades. You are fortunate that you were not discouraged from learning or falsely convinced that you were in fact a moron. Many other people were and had much worse outcomes; many now are receiving not so subtle messages from incompetent, antisocial teachers and will be convinced that they are stupid and unable to learn past a certain point.

In my more recent experience and in the experience of many others, some teachers and administrators also happen to have irrational prejudices that come out in their treatment of students, i.e., low expectations based on some metric that has no relationship to student intellectual potential. In my state in the past certain class action lawsuits were filed and won in an attempt to put a stop to that. But one cannot effectively legislate against erroneous bias.

And quite frankly, even relatively stupid people can become public school teachers (or presidents, or prime ministers, or dictators).

There is no requirement that a teacher pass a popularity contest in order to keep their job. So you would do well to remember that your education depends on you and the effort you make to go way beyond what the school requires or is willing to teach. A teacher is there to show you the path to follow, and to advise you along the way. Some are more willing to do this than others. The best you can do is to try to form a good working relationship with the teacher.

In my state (California) a candidate must have a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree although it does not matter what their major was. With a few more classes relevant to teaching, the candidate is eligible to take a test, which I think at this time is the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBEST

Public school teachers are first and foremost people who are trying to make a living. They had the time and money to get through college; they took advantage of the opportunity to become a teacher. It has proven for many public school teachers to be a secure position with benefits and a pension. You would not know that from complaints by teachers unions.

Teachers unions have been known to claim that if teachers were paid more, you would get better results from them in K-12 schools. Go figure. That is a hard case to sell when you consider that many folks whose kids are at those schools are living in a significantly lower socioeconomic status than the teachers and have no way of changing that. If you think you have been shown disrespect by teachers in your K-12 experience, imagine how those parents feel.

Some teachers are very motivated to do a great job, and they truly care about the outcome of their teacher/student relationships. But teachers are often constrained by curriculum imposed on them by their employer, and any deviation from it represents a real threat to their job security.

None of the above complaints from teachers can justify incompetence and antisocial behavior.

Some other issues:

Schools here are funded by local property taxes and thus school resources and quality tend to vary inversely with average socioeconomic status of the people living in any particular school district.

Currently California K-12 public school districts want to do whatever they can to make their mandatory standardized test scores look good because the district鈥檚 eligibility for state and ultimately federal funding is based on that score. They tend to work toward the lowest common denominator rather than teaching toward a greater goal.
Unfortunately, as of right now, this is the case with most people. I have come across some HORRIBLE teachers myself. I was JUST thinking earlier today about how there are so many people who absolutely do not need to be in the line of work they are in and I started wondering how we should start screening them better.

My husband was telling me about a state trooper that pulled him over the other day while he was driving home from a doctor's appointment. He was supposedly going "2 miles over the speed limit." You can't legally ticket someone for going only 2 miles over.. it is basically just a waste of time. My husband just got off work too and had to go to the appt. right after (he works 3rd shift so his sleep is messed up) so of course he was exhausted. And the thing is, there was a woman behind him who was weaving back and forth in the lane, putting on her makeup, brushing her hair, brushing her teeth, and talking on her cell... my husband pulled up to an intersection and this woman pulled up NEXT TO HIM instead of behind him, didn't look to see if any traffic was coming, and just pulled right out into the road... all while on her cell. And the cop didn't bother to pull HER over! My husband pointed this out to the guy... but he got a robot answer of course.. he got off with a warning that apparently had already been printed up and everything. (The newer police cars have cameras that scan for license plate numbers and run them through the computer.. we think that because my husband got pulled over for not wearing a seat belt a while back that this guy saw that on his record after running the plate and THEN pulled him over HOPING to catch him not wearing his seat belt.. cuz he even asked if he was wearing it even though it was obvious that he was because he had to reach over to get the registration crap outta the glove compartment and the guy saw him unbuckle it..)

My point is, in every line of work, you will come across people who SUCK at their job. I can't even begin to tell you all the crap I've put up when dealing with teachers. And when you're a kid, a good kid, you can't say anything. It's just not in your nature to talk back to someone who is supposed to be an authority figure. I always say that teachers should be one of the most respected people and should get paid more (my mom is Korean, and over there teachers are revered up there with doctors and stuff..) but when I see all the crappy ones out there, I just dunno what to say. My kids also have to put up with dumb teachers. I have sent letters before.. and one of them even sent me a nasty email back. I was upset because the jerk had this assignment set up for the very first day of school, and if you messed it up in any way you got detention. Of course, my daughter gets detention.. I don't understand how a teacher can even come up with something like that on the first day. Regardless of how bad he was treated before, you can't have a chip on your shoulder like that.

It's like these teachers have no idea what it's like to be a kid.. or how much it affects a child when an adult makes them feel bad like that. It shapes you! I mean, you carry those memories with you forever.

I hope you can get past it all and use all of those experiences toward a greater good. You are the sum of your experiences. :)
