Would someone still be able to teach?

-If someone committed a petty theft crime, one of those " oh I was stupid while 18 or 19" deals & stole under $50.00. Would they still be able to get their teaching liscense & get a job? Are some states easier then others?I think that if the crime was not a felony and it was only a single occurrence years in the past that it wouldn't make a difference. Most applications ask only about felony convictions and background checks are probably focused on crimes against children.
